Habitat for Humanity India brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity India began in 1983 as a grassroots effort. The housing organisation has since grown to become a leading housing nonprofit that has helped over tens of thousands of families in India build or improve a place they can call home. Through its housing, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and housing disaster resilience and response programmes, Habitat for Humanity India has positively impacted the lives of over 7.8 million people across the country. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower.
Habitat for Humanity India has been working in India since 1983 in partnership with families living in poor and vulnerable housing conditions. We believe that housing provides a foundation for families to build a better future for themselves. While we have Christian roots, Habitat for Humanity India works with people from all backgrounds, faiths, castes, races and cultures. Habitat for Humanity India will not proselytize. Nor will Habitat India work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Habitat India. This means that Habitat India will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
An estimated 1.6 billion people globally already live without adequate shelter. In India, more than 78 million people live in poor housing conditions. Families without decent housing are exposed to greater personal and environmental risks, are less nourished and have less access to health care.
According to the WHO, improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent diseases, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, help mitigate climate change and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The right to a decent shelter is a fundamental right of every citizen and Habitat for Humanity India is committed to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat India’s work complements the Government of India’s ‘Housing For All’ vision and the national flagship housing initiative ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’ (Prime Minister’s Housing Programme).
The need for affordable, safe and healthy housing is more apparent than ever.
