Access to secure land titles is foundational to building safe, permanent and dignified homes. Without land security, housing remains uncertain, especially for low-income families, Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs).
On 11 February 2026 in Chennai, Habitat for Humanity India convened leading civil society organisations and representatives from the Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, for a state-level consultation on land security and land titles. The dialogue brought together participants from Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Trichy to collectively examine existing challenges, systemic gaps, and actionable solutions.
The consultation was strengthened by the participation and encouragement of S. Annadurai, Director, Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, who emphasised the need for coordinated, integrated efforts to ensure holistic development among tribal families.
This convening marks an important step toward forming multi-stakeholder district-level core groups to strengthen data sharing, improve coordination, and enable at least 1000 families to secure land titles over the next two years.
Because secure land rights are not just about ownership — they are about dignity, stability and opportunity.
