28th May 2025, Pune: Habitat for Humanity India, a leading housing non-profit organisation, has partnered with Northern Trust to implement a community development initiative in Khed block, Pune district. As part of this effort, 13 low-income families in Chikhalgaon village have built new homes with Habitat For Humanity’s support. Each home is equipped with a solar lighting system, improving access to clean energy. In addition, 18 other households in the village have also gained access to solar power at the household level. To further support the community, a sanitation unit has been constructed at Siddheshwar Vidyalaya in Kude village, improving hygiene for around 70 students and strengthening school infrastructure.
“Before this, we lived in a house that would leak every time it rained. There was no electricity and my daughters and wife had no privacy,” said Balu, a resident of Chikhalgaon village. “Now, with a solid roof over our heads, access to solar power and sanitation units, our lives have changed. My children can sleep, study and grow up in dignity.”
“Every person deserves to live in a home that is safe, secure and supports their well-being,” said Anand Kumar Bolimera, National Director, Habitat for Humanity India. “By working together with the families in Khed and with the support of Northern Trust, we are not just building homes — we are building a foundation for families to thrive with dignity, health and opportunity.”
“At Northern Trust, we are committed to supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference in communities,” said Suresh Jethwani, India Chief Administrative Officer, Northern Trust. “Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity India reflects our belief in sustainable development through access to safe shelter, clean energy and sanitation. We are proud to stand with the families of Khed as they build a better future for themselves and their children.”
This initiative has served over 200 people, including homeowners, their families and schoolchildren. By working in partnership with the local community to building their homes and by giving them access to solar energy and improved sanitation, the project contributes to creating healthier and more resilient communities.
